took this a few days ago at Side Cut. Always think its interesting when clouds move in and the sky goes from light and cloudless to gray heavy clouds. The grass on the path was so green, even while everything else is beginning to turn to fall colors…

Meadow, originally uploaded by Christine Bailey.
More early fall colors from the meadow at Side Cut…I don’t like this one quite as much as the previous post of the red and green leaves from earlier today…

Out at Sidecut on Sunday for a 4 mile hike extravaganza…not sure what these plants were…red leaves on tall stems with light green undergrowth and the light filtering through…love the colors!

Full disclosure: I burned out the lower part of the sky when I took the picture so I tweaked the colors to restore it and make the picture look closer to what we actually saw…

Crib in the Meadow, originally uploaded by Christine Bailey.
Walking the dogs at Side Cut tonight…father down toward Waterville, in the meadow under the Fallen Timbers monument when suddenly my husband says, “what’s that??’ We look over and there is this ancient looking metal BABY CRIB sitting in the grass. This was so strange I decided I must take a picture.
The weirder part was that we were a few feet from a clearing, where we stopped to throw something in the trash, then we turned back….and it was gone! We knew we were in the right place because 1. We never moved more than about 30 feet from it and 2. It was right next to one of the trail markers. So strange, someone grabbed it and was gone that fast.
I came home and decided to soften the focus to make it look a little otherworldly – fitting for a mysterious disappearing crib in the middle of a field. So, I processed it to within a inch of its life – but I do think it came out not too bad!

A small group was watching this guy cast our repeatedly to try and rescue a ball that some kids had lost in the Maumee River at Sidecut. He did eventually get it to shore.

Our park system is a never ending source of cool, yet inanimate, objects for me to take pictures of. There used to be a canal system (which is now one of our main roads) and a series of locks connecting it to the Maumee River. There are a few parks in the area (Side Cut and Providence) that still have remains of the lock system, and they are kind of cool to look at – you can stand at the top of one and look down the line through three others headed toward the river. This is down at the end of one, the trickle of water that still sits there makes a small waterfall and I experimented with the settings to see the resulting effects on the flow of water.

If you enter Side Cut Park in Maumee (on the side that still has the canal locks) and take the trail that goes out to the Fallen Timbers monument, it takes you in and out of the woods and through a meadow. The trail bypasses a local cemetery by winding around it from behind.
We were walking the trail last night (as we have done many times before) and this marker is tucked in the trees at the top of a small hill along the trail. It looks interestingly out of place there, though I know it is part of the cemetery, (probably an old boundary marker or fence post for the property). We did find another one when we accidentally walked up the cemetery’s service drive looking for an alternate way to join the trail. I just always wonder exactly what they were for and how long they’ve been there.

Headed out to the park this afternoon and saw a crane. Someday I will get a crisp picture of one, but until then this is probably the best one I’ve been able to get yet…

The most peaceful spot around, just me and the woodpeckers tap-tapping away. Family and dogs were up around the bend. Picture’s a bit too dark – I wanted to use the available light yet not overexpose the picture.
I’ve been going to this park all of my life. I’m glad we still live here and my child is learning to appreciate it now.
